Old news but Good news

Alanis gets her musical act together

FOR THOSE who belong to a certain age group, one of last Christmas' presents was no doubt a purple-colored CD from a certain formerly angst-y female artist. Yes, that one-and, yes, she's still very much with us.
Conveniently released just before the holiday season's gift-buying frenzy, Alanis Morissette's first retrospective collection -- conveniently titled "The Collection" -- is the singer's 10th album, and her second for 2005. The first was "Jagged Little Pill Acoustic," released to commemorate the 10th year anniversary of "JLP."
These two albums have prompted some to wonder whether Ms Morissette has finally run out of things to sing about.
Interview
Not so, said the singer in a previous interview-"The Collection" is merely her "sorbet between entrees." The year 2005 "turned into my time to acknowledge, for the first time, everything that I've done."
This anthology is not really a "greatest hits" collection. Neither is it, strictly speaking, a "best of." As she wrote in the inlay, "These songs hold a soft spot in my heart," but "to consider them my favorites wouldn't take into account the fact that my favorites can change as I do."
What "The Collection" is, she explained, "is a great overview of the past years, to provide objectivity, and some slate-cleaning inspiration for where I'm about to go, as I continue to chronicle the unfolding of my life and my personal observations."
To be more specific, it's a bunch of songs culled from "JLP," "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," "MTV Unplugged," "Under Rug Swept," "Feast On Scraps," "So-Called Chaos" and from the soundtracks of "The City of Angels," "Dogma" and "De-Lovely."
It also includes a cover of Seal's "Crazy," the first single released from "The Collection."
The album is an eclectic compilation, and though it may sound uneven, it nevertheless gives you a fairly comprehensive look at Alanis' work thus far.

And as you will see in the picture, she is "B L O N D E.
"Wunderkind" is nominated for Best Original Song
(Motion Picture) for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia,
at the 2006 Golden Globe Awards.
She didn't get the award, but I'm sure she was pretty thrilled to be nominated.
Wunderkind is the third song she wrote for a film (*).

Alanis Writing Memoir, Album
Morissette to reflect on life, love and music in upcoming book
In between intense writing sessions for her next studio album, expected in 2007,
Alanis Morissette will spend this year working on a memoir.
"It will be all the wisdom I've accrued in the thirty-one years of my life," the singer-songwriter says with a laugh. "A lot about relationships, fame, travel, body-image issues, spirit -- with a lot of self-deprecating humor peppered throughout, 'cause I just can't help it."
Morissette has wanted to pen a book for some time now, and she finally decided to toss her reservations out the window. "I was getting a little too precious about book-writing, putting this unrealistic expectation on myself that I had to somehow not only encapsulate my past, but the next forty years of my life as well," she says. "That's just ridiculous -- I'd end up writing it when I'm ninety-five."
As for her more familiar task of songwriting, she's well on her way to crafting a follow-up to 2004's So Called Chaos. "I'm teeming with ideas right now because I haven't written a record in three years," she says. "I have more than enough thoughts to congeal together."
For the album, she is enlisting a few collaborators, among them Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Eminem), with whom she teamed for "Wunderkind," her Golden Globe-nominated song from the film The Chronicles of Narnia.
Morissette found out about the nomination from her fiance, actor Ryan Reynolds, after her phone lit up. "The fact that it had been ringing off the hook was terrifying to me," she says. "My immediate reaction was, 'Oh God, something's wrong!'"
She will indeed be in the house at the Beverly Hilton on Monday night. "I look forward to getting all cleaned up," she says. "The entertainment industry is filled with really wild, creative, expressive people, so I'll be on all night."

A beautiful movie, and a beautiful song..
So last Saturday night (07 january), I went to see "The Chronicles of Narnia" at Glorietta 4 (Makati City, Philippines) with a friend, and I am so thrilled to hear Alanis' singing "Wunderkind" at the end credits of the movie. I'm also happy that many people actually recognised that it's her voice, so she's not after all forgotten at this end of the world.
And as for the movie, I enjoyed it, even though I haven't read much about it. I enjoyed the poshy-ness of the British accent in it, especially now that I'm working for a British company, and I'm now in my "elocution" training.
So to all of you, who still haven't seen the movie, or hear "Wunderkind" go out and watch it!

This much I know (an Observer UK article)

This much I know
Alanis Morissette, musician, 31, London

Observer
Any time I even think of eating or drinking anything that tastes of peach I want to throw up.
People have preconceived ideas of what I'm going to be like. Angry, reactive, man-eating, that kind of thing. Are they incorrect? No, but there's also a whole other side that they might not have been considering.
I don't mind talking about 'Ironic'. I was in a bookstore in New York and this woman followed me into the bathroom and said, 'You realise that your song isn't filled with ironies?' I said, 'Yeah, I do.' She said, 'That's the irony!' I said, 'Sure, yes.' I just thought that was a really sweet moment, that the most ironic thing about the song is that it's not chock-full of ironies. There's probably a couple in there.
A lot of guys say that they have to treat a woman like shit in order to get her to like them. I don't know if that's so true. It has served me to try and understand men rather than try to kill them. They're a little more complicated than I would have given them credit for! If I could be a man for a day I'd go and apologise to every woman I walked up to [laughs]. And stand around in urinals.
When I was younger I was obsessed with being older. It was a quandary of sorts, because I felt stimulated by adult conversation, and yet at the same time I wanted to be emotionally childlike. You know how young girls can put a little make-up on and they look 30 years old? That was me! I look younger now than I did then.
I'm not that afraid of being vulnerable. I think that's a good quality.
I'm 5ft 4in but people expect me to be taller. I can understand that because I look at photos of myself on stage and I think, 'Jesus Christ, I look 6ft 7in!'
I met a young man in Japan who had my face tattooed on his arm. I thought, 'Wow, what if you stop listening to my music in 10 years?'
Alanis is a Greek name, I think. My parents saw it in a newspaper. After my having researched it a couple of times over the years, it means the family member who runs away and everyone else kind of rolls their eyes. That's the 'Alanis' of the family, not necessarily the black sheep. And my dad is called Alan, so it's a narcissistic offshoot.
I cut my own hair. It's easier.
With spiders and insects, I pretty much freeze up. I can't do it. I have to call someone else into the room.
My faults? I call them challenges. I'd like to give a little less of a shit about other people approving of me or liking me. That's a big one; it's getting better, though. It depends when you catch me.
I've never taken acid, but I've been around many people who have. I was more of a pot, and tried mushrooms, person, but I'm so paranoid. I was just terrified that I'd be the one person that would OD having tried it for the first time, as if that's possible.
If you're an unhappy person I don't think money will make you happy, but if you're a happy person and you have money it's fun. I'm predominantly happy.
I very much believe that our thoughts create what happen, so I watch what I'm thinking.

Official lyrics to Wunderkind
"Wunderkind"
Oh perilous place
Walk backwards toward you
Blink disbelieving eyes chilled to the bone
Most visibly brave
No apprehended bloom
First to take this foot to virgin snow
I am a magnet for all kinds of deeper wonderment
I am a wunderkind oh
I live the envelope pushed far enough to believe this
I am a princess on the way to my throne
destined to serve
destined to roam
Oh ominous place
Spellbound and un-childproofed
My least favorite chill to bear alone
compatriots in place
they'd cringe if I told you
our best back pocket secret: our bond full blown
I am a magnet for all kinds of deeper wonderment
I am a wunderkind oh
I am a pioneer naive enough to believe this
I am a princess on the way to my throne
destined to seek
destined to know
most beautiful place
Reborn and blown off roof
My view: about face weather, great will be done
I am a magnet for all kinds of deeper wonderment
I am a wunderkind oh
I am a groundbreaker naive enough to believe this
I am a princess on the way to my throne
I am a magnet for all kinds of deeper wonderment
I am a wunderkind oh
I am a joan of arc and smart enough to believe this
I am a princess on the way to my throne
destined to reign, destined to roam
destined to reign, destined to roam
